Our Purpose
At Total Psychology, our purpose is to help children, adults and families understand what is happening, why things may feel difficult, and what might help next.
We believe meaningful psychological support should not depend on having a diagnosis. You may already have a diagnosis, be waiting for an assessment, have been told that diagnostic criteria were not met, or simply feel that something is not quite working and want help making sense of it.
There is no single route into support. Depending on what you need, you can choose the level of psychological input that feels right for you.
A one-off psychological consultation gives you the opportunity to talk things through with an experienced psychologist. We can bring together your concerns and experiences, think about possible explanations, and identify practical ideas and recommendations. This can be particularly helpful if you don't know what you need, are unsure whether a formal assessment would be useful, or simply want professional guidance and a clearer sense of direction.
Alternatively, you can choose a more comprehensive psychology-led assessment. This takes a broader and deeper look at the whole person considering elements such as special educational needs and may include psychological assessment tools where appropriate. We can consider neurodevelopment, cognition and learning, emotional and behavioural needs, relationships and attachment, trauma, sensory differences, medical and developmental history, and the environments in which difficulties occur.
From understanding to practical next steps
Our work is designed to be useful in real life, not simply to result in an assessment or report.
For children and young people, psychological understanding can help inform what may be needed within school, college or further education. We can provide psychologically informed guidance around considerations of reasonable adjustments, approaches to learning and emotional wellbeing, transitions, support strategies and possible next steps. Where relevant, this can also help families think about existing or potential Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) provision and how a young person's psychological needs may be understood and supported within education.
For adults, we can consider how an individual's strengths and needs affect work, further or higher education and everyday life, providing recommendations for helpful adjustments, ways of working, communication, wellbeing and practical support within the workplace.
Importantly, assessment is not where the process has to end. We can use what we learn to develop a psychological understanding of strengths and needs, identify appropriate interventions, and create meaningful, individualised next steps. Where helpful, this may include further psychological support, clear signposting for specific formal assessment, intervention, consultation with families or professionals, therapy, coaching or guidance for education and work settings.
Our focus is
“What is happening for this person, why might it be happening, what do they need, and what can we do next?” this is echoed in our ethos of "what now? What Next?'.
Whether you need one conversation, a fuller psychological assessment, or ongoing intervention and support, Total Psychology can help you find the right starting point and a clearer way forward.
Total understanding. Total support. Total direction. Total Psychology.
Because you deserve the right support — with or without a diagnosis.
