Specialist Theraputic Support
Therapeutic support with those who have learning disabilities & behavioural needs and their families
I have many years experience supporting children, teenagers and adults with learning disabilities and additional learning or behavioural needs. As part of my Doctorate Research Thesis I have spent many hours interviewing and working with families and relatives who have a loved one with a learning difficulty, so have a particular interest in this field.
The principles of counselling remain the same but my experience has shown me that people with additional needs may require more creative ways to enable them to explore their issues, thoughts, feelings and emotions. I therefore utilise methods to aid self-expression and understanding for example using objects of reference, work sheets, drawings and media (I assess suitability depending on ability and willingness to engage with these approaches).
Issues I work with include:
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
- Family issues
- Family stress
- Sibling relationships
- Diagnosis issues
- Phobias
- Eating disorders
- Stress
- Abuse
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bereavement
- Loss
- Anger
- Relationship issues
- Finance issues
- Health issues
- Identity
- Sexual issues
- Employment
- Life transitions
Please Note: I accept referrals when they are funded and initiated by organisations. This includes educational settings, private health and social care services, charities, social care, NHS, Civil Services and Insurance Companies. I am not currently accepting self-referred cases from individual families, parents or children.
